Due to the fact it is a usenet news server, you now WILL need my permission in order to read usenet news off The Used Kharma Lot. Generally, if you have a problem, and some do, you will receive a notice you are not authorized to read news off my servers. If you think that is an error on my part, please contact me in e-mail and I will set matters straight. Dave Laird, news admin dlaird@kharma.net

A place where friends, mortal enemies, business associates and other kindred spirits gather together to discuss the issues of the day and occasionally write verse or stories to one another. It ranges from moving to delightful and sometimes makes you mad.

A place where Spokane, Regional, State and Federal politics are fair game. We have ample targets so it is never dull or boring. It beats the local news media two out of five.

The information center of the Used Kharma hierarchy of newsgroups. Bulletins regarding the system are posted there. Sometimes Moses comes by and reads the commandments, too.

Tech bulletins, advisories, strange little pieces of eclectic esoterica relating to computers and occasional factual bulletins are all posted here. We aim to be factual. Sometimes we make it.

A Brief History of Kharma
The Used Kharma Lot BBS originally began service in August of 1989 as a Fidonet BBS, from Springdale, Washington. Using a pair of 14,400 baud modems and a toll-free line to Spokane, it flourished until a series of health issues forced me as owner/creator, to move closer to Deer Park and medical care providers. At that time, it shut down, only to re-emerge from the ashes as The Phoenix BBS less than four days later, operating from behind the Clayton Tavern. The BBS continued to operate as The Phoenix from 1994 through 1998, at which time with the help of Bob Kirkpatrick, I built a unix server, thus creating used.kharma, a usenet, web and mail server, used.kharma.spk.wa.us which in the last quarter of 1999 became used.kharma.net. spite numerous hack attempts, Kharma is still alive and kicking today. Throughout its multi-hued history, Kharma has maintained two separate goals: (1) provide a place for people in the Inland Northwest and Spokane to discuss regional topics and (2) a place to post/display stories and opinions which I and others have written. Over the years, I have written in excess of 1400 stories, tales, children's stories or science fiction pieces, the majority of which have first appeared on Kharma. I have been fortunate to be able to sell some of these properties, while others have languished on the shelf for lack of a proper venue. I still write every day, some days more than others. I am working on my second book, the bulk of which consists of my first science fiction full-length novel, which is expected to go to print sometime late winter in 2002.
